ThreeCrows: @JimmyKimmel recently aid the same thing about Leno. And it: "The ratings were low because the early Leno show was dragging the ratings down and many of the local affiliates had begun to complain that it was impacting their news time. They had planned on putting something else on to stop the eroding ratings number. NBC didn't want to lose Leno and made the decision to put him back and he, being the corporate spineless shill, went along with it, never mind the agreement made with Conan. If Leno had done the admirable thing and walked away or took the cancellation, Conan would have eventually seen his numbers go up. His show still would have made money for NBC. The thing that annoyed the comedic establishment is that they knew who the real Jay Leno was and even though he claimed he had nothing to do with it, he went along with it and lost so many of his peers along with their respect. Jay also crossed the Writer's Guild picket line too and that didn't sit well with them either. Letterman made an agreement with the Writer's Guild that honored the picket line and he paid for the writers out of his own pocket."
